What are Shares?
Shares represent fractional portions of a company’s ownership. By owning shares, you essentially own a small portion of the company’s assets and profits. These individual units are collectively referred to as "stocks," a term often used interchangeably with "shares" in the financial world.
Shares VS Stocks: Are They the Same?
"Shares" refer to ownership in a specific company, while "stocks" is a broader term that can represent ownership in one or multiple companies. For example, owning shares in Nvidia and Tesla forms part of your stock portfolio.
Think of a company’s stock as a whole cake, with each slice representing a share. The more slices you own, the bigger your stake—owning the majority of slices makes you the majority owner. If the cake becomes popular, demand for slices increases, and the price of each slice can rise. This is similar to how share prices fluctuate based on market trends, demand, and the company’s performance.
While the total number of slices (shares) is limited, companies can issue more shares or split existing shares into smaller units through stock splits.
Why Trade Shares?
Trading shares allows you to participate in the performance of some of the largest companies globally, such as Tesla, Apple, Alphabet, and Meta. By engaging in share trading, you can potentially capitalise on market movements and diversify your investment portfolio.
With Vantage, you can trade stocks of the biggest US companies commission-free* through Contracts for Difference (CFDs). This means you can speculate on price movements without owning the underlying asset, potentially offering flexibility and cost-efficiency.

Can I trade stock CFDs with a small starting balance, such as $100?
In short, yes. It depends on the broker that you open an account with, the trading plan that you’ve set out, as well as the leverage that you use on your trades.
Leverage amplifies the effect of price changes, whether it’s a gain or loss, allowing you to trade significantly more in value with an initial capital of $100. However, trading with high leverage also comes with significantly higher risk, as you may lose more than your initial capital. -
3
What stock CFDs may be suitable for beginners?
As a beginner, before buying any stock, it is important to research and understand the company and its business. Start by doing your research on the companies that you are familiar with and have a proven track record.
Large, well-established companies, often referred to as "blue-chip" stocks, can be a good starting point to consider. Another way to get exposure to stocks is to consider exchange-traded funds (ETFs), which offer diversification as they track a broad market index or sector. Read more about stocks or ETFs on the Vantage Academy. -
